Flights in Nature

I love Terri’s Sunday Stills challenge that asks us to share photos capturing flights. Since I primarily take nature photos, I am sharing a few birds in flight. I was surprised to find that most of my photos are birds sitting still, so this challenge has reminded me that I need to work on taking more pictures of birds in motion.

This red-tailed hawk caught me by surprise as I was hiking along a cliff when it came up over the ridge by my head.

This red-tailed hawk also came out of nowhere and surprised me. The lighting was not great on this hazy beach day, but adjusting the exposure allowed me to focus on its beautiful markings. Pismo Beach, California.

Not all hawks are as daring as the one at Pismo Beach, but this fledgling was fun to watch as he figured it out. I watched him with his siblings practice flights for days after leaving their nest above my house.

Not all flights are created equal, but I love seeing any flight in nature. Birds are (usually) peaceful when soaring high above us.
