Cellpic Sunday: Winter Day at Beach

It has been quite stormy here in southern California lately — we have had more rain (and snow in the mountains) than we are used to having. Today, there was a break in the storms, and I was able to sneak down to the beach to enjoy intermittent sunshine. I captured some photos with my iPhone 12 Pro Max for Johnbo’s Cellpic Sunday photo challenge.

Early morning at Crystal Cove State Beach, after a winter storm.

The birds seemed to be out enjoying the weather too. I spotted a lone long-billed curlew and one least tern couple on my walk. The least tern male was “serenading” the female; you can see him on the left in those photos. He was squawking incessantly at the female, and she was just standing there, acting indifferent. I also saw a few dolphin pods, a seal, and a couple of whale spouts, and I really regretted not bringing my 300mm lens with me!

This morning at the beach was very peaceful. I could tell a storm had just come through, as there was severe beach erosion. I have never seen a river cutting through the beach at this location. I was glad it was nice out, or I would not have taken off my sandals to cross the river.

I hope all of you had a lovely Christmas or other holidays, and you are able to get out and enjoy nature! I am definitely happy to be back in SoCal, walking on the beach in the sun.

I am an avid nature and ecology lover and enjoy sharing my photography in my blog writings. I will often be out early in the morning or late in the evening with my camera, trying to capture the peacefulness and beauty around me.
