FOTD – Hummingbird Visits Hot Lips

Luckily, we have decent weather in California, and I found a peaceful park nearby just before the rains arrived today. There is a nice view of the snowcapped mountains and orange groves, which will be more spectacular when the wind blows out the smog-haze.

I came across these interesting red and white flowers that remind me of Christmas colors, known as Salvia microphylla, or “hot lips”, which are heavily guarded by a male hummingbird. He is fast, but I got lucky with a few shots, using my 70-300mm DSLR lens, for Cee’s Flower of the Day (FOTD) challenge. He camouflages well — see if you can find him in the photos!

I can see that I will need a few visits to the park to capture more photos of the little guy amongst the Salvia, as I am pretty sure this is his spot. He was making a lot of territorial hummingbird noises from the nearby trees in between visiting the flowers.

Merry Christmas!

  1. Hummingbirds are keenly selective! How inquisitive they are to select these beautiful red flowers! So difficult to capture these birds among their habitat especially among this spectacular backdrop! Beautiful pictures!
